Toothaches are a common dental problem and are characterized by pain from the tooth, the area surrounding a tooth or the jawline area near a particular tooth. Occasionally, a toothache will stem from the jaw joint. Common causes of toothaches include:

  • Cavities
  • Cracked teeth
  • Periodontal disease
  • Exposed tooth roots

Toothaches may also be the result of other medical conditions, such as ear infections, sinus infections and heart attacks.

When you come to our practice with a toothache, our dentist will take X-rays of your teeth and supporting structures and examine your mouth to determine the source of your discomfort. After diagnosing the cause of your toothache, we will design a treatment plan to relieve your pain and help you regain your oral health.

If you have a toothache, you may also develop symptoms other than pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, it may be a sign that you require more extensive treatment. Please inform our dentist and team if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Gums that are swollen, red or tender
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Gums that pull away from your teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste that lingers in your mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth are misaligned
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Pain that causes you to avoid brushing certain areas
  • Pain when biting or chewing

We strongly encourage you to schedule and keep all routine appointments for preventive care. This will help prevent toothaches and other dental problems so that you can continue enjoying a healthy smile.
